Hello
I just met the class that I will be working with in september, reception/year 1.
All I seemed to be doing is taking them to the toilet Rolling Eyes
How do you keep toilet trips to the minimum and what do you do if the same people keep asking?

one thing would be to build it into thier routine so make sure they all go at break, before lunch etc and then if you need to take one see if any more need to go to although this can put the idea into the heads of ones who mayb dont really need to go

We are fortunate that until y3 toilets are in the classroom (en-suite)

Early days. Set a routine and then see 'needs' it often. You may need to check with the parents if any particular children seem to go too much. My son had an issue and actually did need the loo, mainly ok after op.

Thanks everyone
Definately talk to the teacher about this to perhaps make up some kind of routine for september.
One boy went at least four times in 2 hours! so perhaps a quick word with the parents.

we have symbolic timetables in all our classrooms and even in Y6 the toilet symbol is there before every break time to remind them all of the apropriate time to go, it doesnt stop all unschedueld trips but it certainly cuts them down

I think at first it is a novelty going to the toilet but it is better to take them than dealing with the other . They will soon get bored. We are having a lot younger ones starting in september maybe just 4years of age and I would rather take them to the toilet than deal with the other which I had to last year!!

That's just what I was thinking. They'll soon get over the novelty. It's quite important to know where the toilets are. Iknow that's the first thing I think about when I go into a new place.

When Reception first come in, every year we seem to spend the first few days forever taking them to the toilet!
When we get a few weeks in it does become a novelty so we encourage them to go at breaktime or sometimes say "Can you wait 5 minutes" then they usually forget they wanted to! Obviously if they look like they need to go let them!
