Thanks for the compliments.
Surprising what you can do with a couple of golf balls. Actually I had to make sure the witch's face was pointing down so that it didn't frighten any of the smaller children walking through. I did get the opinion of the yr 1 and 2 children who were not fazed by her at all.

Jack of all trades

yes we had some brilliant stories from the children. After playing in the fairy tale land in groups and role-playing different stories [and making their own up too] We gave all the ks1 children an independent piece of writing to do for assessment. The standard of language they used and sequencing of events was much improved.

One day I was working with a child 1-1 doing reading whilst keeping my eye on children playing in role-play area. [I was hid behind the castle so wasn;t intrusive to their play] It was fascinating listening to 6yr olds adapt fairy tales to their own versions.

At one point I did intervene talking about the descriptive words on the butterflies and got them to show me how a bird would swoop/glide etc.
A lot of these adjectives came out in their writing.

The yr 3 children also had the opportunity to play in their too. I think they were doing letters to Cinderella or other characters in the story. They also used it to act out Aesop's Fables using the hand puppets.

We are also targeting boys writing and trying to increase imaginative writing. One resource that a TA in ks2 is using is the ' writing pack from

She is having great success with it, but we have come to realise that children need to be able to plan and develop ideas first rather than having to complete a written story all in one literacy lesson.

I used one card from it with my Low ability yr 2 group. This group find it difficult to write anything down, so I worked for a week on adapting jack and the bean stalk story into a group one, rather than having to produce one each. We started off brain storming, then picking out bits to extend, I then produced one card which said " Suddenly there was a crash!" The ideas were flowing very fast.
In the end they each took one piece of the story to type out on the computer and painted a picture which I stuck on the back of their page. We turned it into a laminated copy and used it as a guided reading book afterwards.
