If we're going back to the old days of making things for ourselves rather than buying them.

I had to pop into Lakeland this morning for some more jam pot lids. Mr T was with me and noticed a Tefal Jam maker out of it's box and on display. In a generous mood he asked if I'd like one. Very Happy Me, not wanting to turn down his kind offer and disappoint him, Rolling Eyes said yes. One of the store staff, over hearing us, apologised and said they didn't have any at the moment. In fact no store had any and head office was waiting for another batch to arrive. Apparently they can't keep up with the demand. Obviously jam making is back in fashion even though it's a more modern way of doing it.

I wonder if things like jam/pickle/chutney/dress making/knitting etc have come full circle. JD makes baskets and sews, a few of you make cards and do cross stitch. Who else is making things for themselves rather than buying them. Are we having to relearn lost skills?

I engrave glasses for gifts, buy a cheap glass add a name etc it costs very little but everyone who has had them has always been pleased.

Tiki, do you have a bread maker? You can make jam in them too, I've not tried it yet but the way costs are going up I think I might so we can have home made bread and jam mmmmm scrummy!

Yes, I have a bread maker. I put it away when I found out that our consumption of hot bread plus butter wasn't doing anything for our weight. Rolling Eyes I do put it into use though when I'm making soups in the winter. I forgot you can use it for making jam. One of the things the dedicated jam maker will do is juice the fruit so that you don't have to put it through a bag. That in itself would be great. My cats and a jelly bag don't mix. Evil or Very Mad

Does anyone else knit? I haven't done any for years. I very much doubt that any of the children in school have ever seen anyone knit. I suppose with the cheap imports there's no incentive to knit anymore.

I used to knit when the children were small. Lovely picture jumpers. Once the twins came along I didn't have the time anymore and now they wouldn't be seen dead in a hand knitted jumper. I have knitted scarves for the girls though with funky wool.

We have a Knitting and crochet afterschool club which is very popular. One of the Nursery Nurses runs it and I pop in every now and again to help pick up stitches and marvel at what they have produced.

I also bake cakes and biscuits which the girls now enjoy doing.

I used knitting scarves with funky wool as a reward time for my 1:1 last year and he loved it. we made scarves for his mum and auntie over a period of 2 terms.

My hobby is to paint glass and I use my painted vases, glasses and pictures as presents and paint inscriptions on them to make them personal.

My mum gave me the inspiration to be crafty when I was a child (we didnt have a tv for most of my childhood). she used to make and sell soft toys then, later in life did 12th scale miniature barge painting.

My nickname comes from my name under which I sold my glass at craft fairs (Jeni - my name and SIS - safe in serenity from how painting made me feel).

the pics show 2 of my pieces and a work in progress.

I think there is no better way of spending time with kids making, crafting or getting messy with glue paint etc. its wonderful to see them use their imagination and creativity.

My youngest son "L" who is 11 is always making something either short story books or card games he also makes a lot of board games.

He thinks up a game, designs the board writes the instructions out and makes the game pieces.

We often play them, they are really good, considering all the games consoles he has I think it's great he chooses to sit and make his own ~ and he always uses empty boxes etc so he's recycling too!

This is one of the many glasses I have engraved, this particular one is for a 4X4 club (that we are members of)

I did one with a Dalek on for L and a Jack Russell for J, I have one with Eeyore on and my name. I'll try and dig some photo's out if I can and if anyone wants to see them?
