I work in reception and what makes me really cross is when the teachers say they have been at school since September they should be better behaved/sit still / not run in school/take turns/ etc.
There are at least 5 out of my tutor group who are August babies, so they
were 4 when they started. I dont care what the teachers say they are babies. I bet if it was their child they would think differently. |

totally agree with that tich
I have two reception children in my nurture group, they are still at the toddler stage, eg biting and tantrums
even when children are older they still might not be at the approriate stage of development
fortunatly we have hada big push on behaviour and self esteem so alot more of our staff members are more aware and treat children stage appropriate rather than age appropriate _________________ Men are like a fine wine. I completely agree with the summer babies way of thinking. I have worked with children who really need to be in the year below because of their age related development, but because of the regulations and the lack of flexibilty they have to flounder in an enviroment that they just don't get
It makes me very as I have always worked with SEN and some of them would not have that label if they had been allowed to have catch up time. The amount of times I went to a teacher to say "x has just done y" to have them look at me as if I was mad because the achievement wasn't "year" appropriate.
I now work for a speech and language unit and find that main stream schools still have far to high expectations of children regardless of their abilities.
That's my rant over off for a glass of red wine now.
Happy New Year all ( believe it or not I am actually looking forward to going back to work tommorrow) |

My sons birthday is at the end of July and he was compared with his best friend who's was beginning of Sept, when I commented on it I was told that they couldn't make allowances they worked to the school year!
Fortunately he turned out to be very bright, but 11 months is 11 months... and it can be hard on some of the children. _________________

I had children at both ends of that scale
number one daughter (dyslexic and reality challenged) was one of the youngest in her year and struggled a lot until she reached KS3
number two daughter arrived 13 months later and was 2nd eldest in her class, she's very bright and became very very bored.
although there is only 13 months between them there is two academic years differnece, if i'd had my way they would have both been in the year in between
fortunalty they are now both doing very well but i did worry when they were in primary _________________ Men are like a fine wine. They all start out like grapes, and it's our job to stomp on them and keep them in the dark until they mature into something you'd like to have dinner with. |

I have in the past fought for my youngest step daughter (who had the luck to be born 31st Aug!!) against her dad .
He has very high expectations for his children (which in itself is not a bad thing) but it took him a while to understand the age gap/intellectual development idea, luckily he does now. |

We are in a foundation unit and have a mix up zone with both nursery and reception. As I work with reception I struggle with the nursery children. They are very argumentative, used to parents doing things for them, and cant share. Apart from that they are lovely! The nursery come to us next year so we tend to sort out which ones we want and which ones we dont! |

Veggie. I felt very smug, keeping my legs crossed so that eldest child was born 1st September........until I had 2nd child at end of August! I now have children 2 years apart in age, but only 1 year apart at school. Wouldn't be so bad, but school has mixed year groups, so every other year they are in the same class group!! Couldn't have planned it worse if I tried!!!! |
