I have been asked to make gingerbread men/lady cookies with R class.
I will be working with small groups.
Only ever had experience baking with my own children.
Any tips, pitfalls I should look out for?
Brilliant recipes that work?

first thing I always do is teach the children how to wash their hands properly and then talk about hygiene. You'd be surprised how many children you'll notice picking their nose with their very clean hands.

i used to eat the year 11 products every week as part of taste testing and then had to fill in a questionnaire!!! the pitfall was...my expanding waistline! it was always cakes and cookies!!

you have to taste everyones or they get upset!!

maybe you will then have to join us in Dieting Dilemma princessdebs!!! Very Happy

I work in Reception and I love cooking with them. We wash our hands and if anyone picks their nose they go and wash them again. In my experience whatever recipe you use the kids will eat the finished product.

There is a super sponge cake one that you can do with the counting teddy bears, thats Ok as long as none of the children pocket any teddies because it messes up the measurements. Let us know how you get on I am sure you and the kids will enjoy yourselves.

The sponge cake that you can do with the counting teddy bears, I might sound daft, but where do the teddy bears come into it? For weighing???

Have you got the plastic teddies, different sizes and colours in the maths section somewhere? Instead of having say 4 ozs of flour you have say 8 middle size teddies on one side of scale and the same weight in flour. Kids love it!

I always love baking with the reception children - the amount of speaking and listening that gets done is fantastic.
Hygiene is very important especially if you are having to taste and we always pick a couple of the children to deliver a cake or gingerbread man to someone in the school - HT, caretaker, secretary.
Most important - have fun because if you're enjoying it, whatever the outcome (and I have been known to set the smoke alarm off regularly) the children will enjoy it too.

cooking instructions!! ( we used to do this in pre-school because we had no cooker )

GONE AND DONE IT NOW!!!!

After postponing this activity a couple of times, got round to doing it yesterday, and all went well, all enjoyed it, all ate them on the way home apparently, and staff finished off the ones made from the left over dough.

A good time was had by all, including me, and if anyone needs a really good recipe for gingerbread men I think mine is very straight forward and easy.

Thanks for all the advice.
