Is a swimming certificate required if I have to support a child with cerebral palsy in the weekly swimming lesson? I have heard that this is necessary now, but would like confirmation from someone who knows. I support this child in a mainstream school.

I have to get into the water with her and cannot leave her for one second. PS I hate doing it, I can't even swim myself!

I cant find anything that answers your question fully, the only thing i have found so far is that there must be

a qualified lifesaver in attendance who can see all the children

however I would be concerned that you are not comfortable in the water and this anxiety 'could' pass on to the pupil

is it possible that another member of staff could swap duties with you for the hour or so that you should be away at the pool. If i were you I'd have a chat with your line manager and discuss your concerns with them

I cant say I blame you for not being comfortable doing it, I love swimming but certainly wouldnt want to parade around in my cossie infront of the children (well not till ive lost a few more stone anyway Embarassed )

Thanks for your reply. I don't think there is any way out of this. I phoned the physiotherapist today and expressed my concern about handling this child in the water as she is rather large. The physio said she would come into the water with us the first session and give advice. She also said she would try to find out if a Certificate was necessary, though she thought not if there was a qualified lifesaver in attendance, as you have already said. Oh well!

At our school all staff who go swimming have to have their shallow water certificates
