Hi dizzy hope you're getting to grips with this.

Caz was right on the previous page, church would be /ch/ /ur/ /ch/ (3 sounds). With synthetic phonics you are selecting the sounds that compose each word and looking at the letters which make those sounds. For some it will be a single letter, for others such as /ay/ /th/ /sh/ etc you will need 2 letters, and for some sounds such as the /j/ in 'badge' you will need 3! It is tricky trying to distinguish what you can hear from what you can see. Thinking about which parts of your speech apparatus that you use can help distinguish one phoneme from another but it does take practise! For example: is you say the blend 'sp' you will articulate 2 phonemes - /s/ using your tongue at the back of your teeth, and /p/ using your lips.

Takes a bit of practise but worth doing to improve your own phonemic awareness! Good luck with it all, hope that helps a bit. If not - I hope it hasn't confused you further!! Very Happy

I spoke to the teacher and she told me not to worry too much and get the new children just to sound out and write the first letter of the word as they are in reception and do not know all there letters sounds and then work on from there. This is helping as was finding it hard to do long sentences and sound them out with the children,as some are finding hard just to hold the pencil.
No you have not confused me it was the web site about sythentic phonics on one of the links which went on about spliting the words up. How you said it was how I thought in the first place. ie using blends etc.
This is where I read about it
