After the success of the Bookworm which grew every time someone read a book, today I have started a maths train display. The steam engine has smoke asking 'How do you use maths?'. The idea is that the pupils and staff come up with ways they have used maths, write it on a carriage and add it to the train. So far (to start it off) we have
* 'P1-4 counted a bottle full of 1p and 2p coins and counted in 1s, 2s and 10s.'
*'I put 34 litres of diesel in my car and then paid for it' - Mrs JD
*'I sorted the welly boots and found a pair for Jxxx' - the head

idea caught on today and lots added, eg
*I counted my skips
*we divided 10 people into 2 teams of 5 for football
*P1-4 found out that 28 people stretched out makes a diplodocus
*I worked out my electricity bill (LS teacher)
*I weigh ingredients for school dinners (cook)
*I keep note of the temperature in the fridge (cook)
*the secretary walks 72 metres to get printing from the colour printer (trundle wheel being used in Golden Time)

Wow, that's just inspired me ! I support a 9yr old who has such a mental block on maths (partly down to very poor working memory, but also stubborness to even give it a try with help) and I've been looking for a way to show her why we need to do number work.
If you don't mind I' going to have a go at a smaller version for my mini maths group.

It is on a board in the entrance hall. The head is adding tracking and wants to have a tunnel! lol! It is similar in appearance to my bookworm, but a train and multi coloured carriages.

Helen - go ahead, that's what this section is for - finding new ideas.

Brilliant idea jd and an excellent way of showing that maths is all around us - so many children think it is just something they have to do in numeracy lessons!
