Hi all,
The deifinitive guide to this, and any exercise activity, seems to be "Safe Practice in Physical Education and School Sport"

Hopefully schools will have a copy of this, if not suggest they do so - saves you buying it
Anyone involved regularly in physical education may want to consider membership to the Asoociation for Physical Education. ASL Membership is £22.50 Primary school membership - covering the school not individuals is £20.
afPE also offers insurance for members for added protection and peace of mind though as TA's you will need to speak to them directly.
One confusing bit is membership starts when they receive your order but ends 31st March 2008 so you may want to clarify this.
If you are doing, or likely to do, physical exercise of any sort unsurpervised I would strongly recommend you familiarise yourself with the schools risk assessment for the activity, any equipment used and area. As well as helping to make you more aware of the potential risks it should provide guidance on how to reduce those risks.
You should also consider asking if it is possible to get a recognised first aid certificate if you do not already have a current one.
If you ae likely to be using the pe apparatus it would also be worth asking if your LEA provides competancy training/certificate.
Sheeeeesh am I getting boring in my old age or what? But seriously the more you are aware of and trained the more relaxed you will be and better able to teach the children.
If you don't feel confident using the apparatus and asked to take pe, then don't use it. But do have a plan what else you can do in its place so you are not floundering. Starting the lesson with reviewing why the school has rules about the use of equipment, ie not more then one person at a time, messing around, etc. particular rules for any individual piece of equipment. This can be followed by asking questions about what they would do if they saw an accident, someone faint, cut themselves etc. Perhaps even if they know how to call emergency services and which to ask for. This can be followed by a game or some exercise.
If questioned point out you didn't feel confident using the equipment and felt this would add unnaceptable risks to the children.
