Hi

Im new into Reception and was asked to do observations during the PE lesson. I have done quite a few observations before in the classroom but found this difficult. I was to observe if they could throw and catch a small soft ball when working in pairs. It was difficult because some of the children couldnt throw the ball properly and so this made it difficult for the other child to catch and so I wasnt getting a true picture of their abilities.

When im working in the classroom doing observations it is easier becauseI can see if they interact with others, share, can use resources safely and properly but in PE I found this hard, any suggestions.

Thanks

Missyd x

Hi Missyd I had to do an observation very similar to the one your talking about. It sounds to me to be stepping stones assessment scale 6 of physical development which is
Uses small and large equipment, showing a range of basic skills
In my oppinion i would say that you sould be observing boths skills (throwing and catching).
we started our groups of two fairly close together then through observation if it seemed to easy we moved them further apart and vise versa. We also started off with large balls then swaped them with small balls if they were coping with the task.
Hope this helps a little Very Happy
the Foundation stage assessment guidelines are very useful ask your teacher if he/she can profide you one.

Good luck kerryl xxx
