Jack-of-all-Trades wrote the following post in another thread. It was such a commensense reply that I thought I'd repost it here as a sticky.

Over the length of time this forum has been running we've often seen and read the threads on the strain and stresses of our everyday lives, both at work and at home.

If you've any tips, hints, ideas on how to make life a little more relaxing why not post them here for all of us to benefit from.

Balancing is hard. I am not a single parent but oH works away from home so am some of the month then he is under my feet.

Tips- try to keep the sitting room /lounge tidy every day that way you have somewhere to relax.

Keep level of mess down in the kitchen and clean so you and kid/kids don't get food poisoning (as that adds to stress.)Blitz cupboards every six weeks/ holidays, kids can help take stuff out of cupboards they are good at this -it is the putting back they are not good at even when 16.

If you get up early you can wash at least one load before going to school.

If you have a dishwasher you can unload it in the time it takes the kettle to boil. My OH has only just discovered this and wondered how I knew Rolling Eyes

Sweep the floor every night and wash it when you can. At least every week.

Bathroom. Basin a quick wipe with a cloth every morning make it easier. Clean the lot every Saturday and in between if you get time. Buy some Flash wipes for a quick mid week clean and emergency guests. Encourage kids to hang towels up. Confused

Put some music on and encourage kids to tidy bedroom before track x comes on. Forget this when they get to teenagers just close the door and only open and shout when you run out of plates, cups and towels. Enter with a peg and be surprised sometimes it's tidy.

Batch cook in the hols and freeze then you have something decent when you can't be bothered after a hard day.

Another tip .DON'T INVITE ANYONE AROUND!

always keep basics in the freezer...a loaf of bread/milk/stuff for pack lunches...so you dont have to waste time running to the shops after work

make double quantities of spag bol/chilli/casseroles/cakes etc and freeze for when you have after school activities/parents eve or when you dont have the energy to cook

if you use a tumbledryer quite a few things can be folded/put straight onto a hanger so you dont have to iron them

keep a supply of cards in stock so you always have one for whatever comes up. saves last minute dashes to the shops.

same applies to wrapping paper.

Buy presents as you see them - splits the cost up too.

I just took 16 - yes 16- towels from my son's room! No wonder we have run out in the bathroom!

My latest purchase is a slow cooker - bliss not to have to start cooking when I come home!

I have a 'birthday box' for pressies - buy them in the sales! Then have a hunt in it when a birthday comes around - especially good for the 'I forgot to give you this invitation' type presents! Also keep a stock of cards in too.

Loving myself so that i can then take on board and accept the love that other ppl have for me.

i have struggled with tht big time all my life. Wise words from my psychotherapist this morning. if i can allow myself to value all that i am then i am more likely and praps more able to value and take in the love from others.

For me that is a very necessary survival technique. esp at the moment.
