Hi, I came across this site whilst exploring the options of training as a teaching assistant, availible work and volutary work to support online training. Currently I work, full time, based at home, in quite a non rewarding, dead end job. I am 42, have two children of 6 and 11 and am seriously looking at this as a change for me. I have worked as a press photographer, designer and in sales over the years, now I need something that is rewarding, fits in with the kids, and can be a career rather than just a 'job'
I would really appreciate some advice on online courses - the better ones, advice on whether it is for someone my age ( I know that sounds awful - but I am sure you know what I mean... ) and any helpful tips would be great.
Also, could I utilise the 'skills' I already have some where - ie photography and art?
Thanks

Sounds to me as if you would be great in a Design and Technology or Media Studies departments, for the photo students. Why don't you contact your local senior schools to see if they would like your input - assistance. Before you can work or volunteer in school you need to be CBD checked. I was checked as part of my college course. Has your 11 year old started at senior school? This may be a way to get into school as the are always on the look out for someone with skills.

I don't know about online courses other that the OU and Learn Direct. Have you contacted your local college? They should be able to advise you on what courses are available.

Good Luck.

Of course it is for someone of your age! Very Happy I had a successful career before I had my children but didn't want to return. I volunteered in school while my children were young, found I enjoyed it so did the training. I was then offered a job in the school and the rest, so they say, is history. I was just a little older than you at the time. I'm sure many secondary schools would love to have someone with your experience.

My aunt is 85 and still goes into school to hear children read on a regular basis.

Good luck
