When do you do your letter and sounds work? Do you do it as part of Literacy or as an additional lesson?
Another question, do you still use the playing with sounds games or just the ones in the letters and sounds book?
We will be looking at long vowels next week starting with ai, ee, igh,oa and I was wondering if there is any particular mnemonic that represents them?
Sorry about all the questions Embarassed but I haven't been with the littleys for ages doing phonics and I know you wonderfull people will be full of ideas!!!
Thanks

We do ours as part of the literacy lesson and use the games for the starter on the carpet. We use alot of the games in the letters and sounds handbook but also thought of our own/adapted the ones in the book.

The mnemonics are all in the handbook as well as how to teach them and associated games etc. If you are teaching long vowels, you want the phase 3 resource.

You can find it here......

We have Reading and Spelling workshops as part of the literacy programme. This involves 20 minutes each day (in KS1 and year3) working in groups. One group does guided reading while the others do games and activities - these rotate during the week so every group as chance to do each activity (differentiated if necessary).

The starter is altogether on the carpet.

Thanks for the info. I have looked in Letters and Sounds and couldn't see if there was a mnemonic for ai etc rather than doing a, i (if you see what I mean!)
Are you in mixed year group classes?

We have letters and sounds sessions daily from 9am to 9.20 in ability groups. { I cover phase three and four] 16 in my group.

Because I already used to use the Ruth Miskin scheme I still use those resources. I have some phoneme cards with the plain sound on one side and a picture and rhyme on the other.

So for the /oa] sound there is a picture of a goat in a boat. and other word with the oa sound. [ I also see the on the DVD from the letters and sounds programme also use these cards too.

They work for my group.

Thanks Bluebell - just been watching the DVD but it doesn't show ai (typical!) however I have found the Jolly Phonics list which has an ai action which I will probably do! Is there anywhere that has all the letter and sounds cards for free do you know?

I've been told to make myself familiar with Letters and Sounds over the holidays so that i cn support small groups of Y3 children with it next year.

I've watched the DVD and i know i need to read the teaching programme.

How on earth do you get your head around it all? there seems to be a heck of alot to study.

and where do you start with the children...

praps i'd better read the manual and that might make things a tad clearer. i do hope so...

x

It's ok once you get your head round it. The book tells you exactly what you need to teach and the order it comes in.

This might be a bit late but we use this planning for letters & sounds by Nicola Byrne Confused

It costs about #40 but is invaluable to get you started. This is how the Letters & sounds booklet should have been produced!

We don't follow the planning as per say, but amend it and add games to suit the groups we take.

We deliver sessions every day, 9 - 9.20 in attainment groups, which means mixed year groups.

if you Google the authors name and letter & sounds planning you should find the link.
